Our Zinc Pyrithione 98% is a water-insoluble off-white powder that acts as an antifouling, antibacterial, and antifungal agent, used in both industrial and personal care applications. It is widely recognized for its fungistatic and bacteriostatic properties, working by inhibiting the growth and division of fungal and bacterial cells. It is commonly used in the treatment of conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. It also can be used as antifungal coating additive and marine coating biocide to prevent biofouling on ship hulls is caused by a variety of aquatic organisms (e.g., barnacles, mussels and algae).

Description

Zinc pyrithione(ZPT or ZnPT) is a zinc complex of 1-hydroxy-2(1H)-pyridinethione, commonly known as pyrithione. As an antibacterial agent, it exhibits antibacterial activity by disrupting bacterial cell membrane integrity and essential metabolic functions. As an antifungal agent, its effect is thought to arise from its ability to disrupt membrane transport by blocking the proton pump that energizes the transport mechanism. A 2011 study further showed that the antifungal activity of zinc pyrithione operates through a copper toxicity mechanism that targets critical iron–sulphur proteins.

Applications of Zinc Pyrithione 

lPersonal Care Products

Widely used in anti-dandruff shampoos to effectively eliminate dandruff-causing fungi.

Helps relieve itching, remove dandruff, reduce hair loss (phalacrosis), and delay hair graying (poliosis).

Considered a highly effective and safe ingredient that enhances shampoo performance and meets consumer demand.

Used as a preservative in personal care formulations.

lPaints and Coatings

Used in antifouling paints and civil coatings to prevent microbial growth.

Applied in marine antifouling coatings, often in combination with Cu₂O, to prevent the adhesion of shells, seaweed, and other aquatic organisms on ship hulls.

lBuilding Materials:

Incorporated into building products to inhibit microbial growth and improve durability.

Plastics and Polyurethane Products

Used as an antimicrobial and preservative in plastics and polyurethane materials.

lTextiles and Clothing: Zinc pyrithione functions as a biocide in textiles, providing effective antimicrobial protection. A process for applying zinc pyrithione to cotton with durable, washable results was patented in the United States in 1984, and it is also used to inhibit microbial growth in polyester. Textiles treated with zinc pyrithione help protect against odor-causing microorganisms.

lAdhesives and Carpets: Acts as a broad-spectrum, environmentally friendly, low-toxicity preservative in adhesives and carpets.

lPesticide and Biocide Applications: Exhibits strong potential in the pesticide field due to its high efficiency, broad-spectrum activity, low toxicity, and environmental compatibility.

lPlastics: Prevents the growth of bacteria, mold, and fungi. It enhances the durability, hygiene, and lifespan of polymer-based products such as PVC and polyurethane.

lInks: It is used as an antimicrobial and antifungal additive to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and fungi. This helps maintain the stability, shelf-life, and hygiene of ink products, particularly in printing inks, packaging inks, and specialty coatings.

 

Package  and storage:

  • Packed in 80kg stainless steel drum or 25kgs fiber box with 20kg or 5 kg high-density polyethylene bag inside.

  • It should be stored in a dry place, between 10℃ and 54℃ , and closed tightly when not in use. Do not store with strong oxidants.
