Flowing Agent for Wrinkle & Decorative Powder Coatings

Kabasph® KMM-5607 flowing agent (also known as water ripple agent, fluffing agent and water ripple agent) is a highly effective metal-organic complex additive specifically designed for the powder coatings industry. It can be used in various powder coating systems, including epoxy, polyester, epoxy-polyester hybrids, and polyurethane.

KMM-5607 flowing agent exhibits strong curing acceleration properties and serves as the core raw material for producing high-end watermark/texture powder coatings. In addition, it is widely applied in the preparation and matting treatment for powder coatings. It is also used to formulate decorative powder coatings with sand grain, wrinkle and crackle finishes.

Key Applications & Characteristics

1. Broad System Compatibility

KMM-5607 is suitable for various powder coating systems. In hybrid (epoxy/polyester) and pure polyester systems, it produces wrinkle and sand-textured effects through the extrusion process. When used with appropriate polyester resins and crosslinkers in outdoor durable powder coatings, it also achieves stable wrinkle finishes.

2. Flexible Application Methods

Internal Mixing (Extrusion): KMM-5607 is mixed, extruded, and pulverized together with resins, pigments, fillers, and other components. This is the classic process for producing wrinkle powder, offering uniform and controllable texture.

External Mixing (Dry-Blend): KMM-5607 is dry-blended as a post-additive with pre-milled base powder. This method requires a lower dosage and produces a coarser, more three-dimensional wrinkle effect (similar to coarse sand texture), providing unique decorative appeal.

3. Versatile Texture Control

Adjustable Pattern Size: The final coating's texture size can be easily controlled by varying the KMM-5607 dosage. As a general rule, a lower additive dosage yields larger patterns, while a higher dosage produces finer, more compact textures. The amount of fillers in the formulation has an inverse effect—lower filler content tends to create a more pronounced, coarser texture.

Diverse Decorative Effects: Using KMM-5607-based wrinkle powder as a base, and then dry-blending a small amount of floating agent (e.g., 0.1–0.2%), further modifies the pattern morphology, creating a wide variety of artistic effects such as snowflake patterns, crackle finishes, and more.

Processing & Usage Recommendations

Extrusion Temperature Control: Due to KMM-5607's strong curing acceleration properties, extrusion temperatures should be maintained at relatively low levels (e.g., 90–100°C) during processing to prevent premature crosslinking within the extruder, which would compromise the final texture.

Film Thickness & Curing: To achieve a clear, three-dimensional wrinkle effect, a coating film thickness of at least 55 µm and a curing temperature of 185°C or above are recommended. For larger patterns, thicker films (e.g., >90 µm) help avoid exposed substrate or dull areas.

Safety & Precautions: Prolonged excessive inhalation of this product's dust may cause mucosal irritation, producing flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, sore throat or minor nosebleeds. Ensure adequate ventilation and wear protective equipment such as dust masks and gloves during handling. In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention. Symptoms typically subside within one week after exposure ceases.
